The post-election pivots keep coming: HBO is indeed selling those blue “We’re Still Here” baseball caps unveiled on the November 11 fall season finale of Real Time With Bill Maher.
Although HBO spokespeople were doubtful earlier this month when Deadline asked about the possibility of a hat sale, the channel’s online store HBO Shop is now hawking ’em, right alongside other “New Arrivals” like Game of Thrones crown-shaped Christmas ornaments and $39.95 Vice Principals spanking paddles.
The ad copy for the 100% cotton hat with Matching Fabric Adjustable Hook and Loop Closure reads: “As seen on Real Time with Bill Maher, this hat featuring the phrase ‘We’re Still Here’ was worn by Bill Maher and his guests on the Season 14 Finale. Get this hat before the show premieres in January!” With the low (and rather odd) sale price of $9.37, it’s safe to assume these aren’t the actual hats donned by Maher and his guests.
Maher introduced the caps on his first show following Donald Trump’s election victory as a response to the president-elect’s ever-present “Make America Great Again” red hats, the “We” in “We’re” repping what even Maher didn’t know at the time might be the majority of the popular vote.
Within hours of the November 11 episode’s end credits, Deadline commenters were wondering where to buy and enterprising Etsy milliners began selling lookalikes. Despite the HBO Shop’s “exclusive” tag, knock-offs were still easily available Sunday – mostly at a higher cost than the officially-sanctioned gear.
