Mika, the director of government relations for Tyson’s D.C. office, was sent to the Washington hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the chest when a lone gunman fired on the June 14 practice. Mika required surgery, and his family said last week he was expected to remain in the hospital “for at least several days.”

On Friday, the Mikas thanked the hospital’s medical staff and local law enforcement for their response to last week’s attack.

“We are truly grateful for the compassionate, world-class care provided by the doctors, nurses and team at George Washington, and we will never forget and continue to be grateful for the heroism shown by the U.S. Capitol Police,” they said in the statement. “We truly appreciate the prayers, words of encouragement and support from Matt’s friends, family and people across the nation and the world.”

Rep. Steve Scalise, the only lawmaker injured in the shooting, has been transferred out of the intensive care unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, according to a statement by the hospital released Friday.

The House majority whip was released following “continued good progress,” the hospital said, but will continue to require “an extended period of healing and rehabilitation.”
