Woman Hit by Broken Baseball Bat at Fenway Has Life-Threatening Injuries – People Magazine

A baseball fan sitting in the stands at Boston’s Fenway Park was seriously injured when she was hit by a broken bat on Friday night.

The woman was bleeding from the head as she was carried out on a stretcher, and police said her injuries were life threatening, the Associated Press reports.

She was hit in the second inning by a bat that broke after a swing by Brett Lawrie of the Oakland A’s, whose team was playing against the Boston Red Sox.

“The bat snapped in half near the end of the bat,” eyewitness Alex Merlas told the Boston Globe. “It hit on the forehead to the top of the head … it was a blunt trauma and it was a lot of blood.”

The game was delayed while the woman was tended to and taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

“Hopefully everything’s okay and she’s doing all right,” Lawrie said, according to the AP. “I’ve seen bats fly out of guys’ hands in[to] the stands and everyone’s okay, but when one breaks like that, has jagged edges on it, anything can happen.”

Red Sox manager John Farrell said the team’s thoughts and prayers go out to the woman and her family, adding, “An accident like this tonight is certainly disturbing.”
