Donald Trump wants to buy the pope’s favorite soccer team – New York Post

Maybe Donald Trump is looking to court the Catholic vote.

The Post has learned that the GOP front-runner is looking to buy Argentina’s Club Atletico San Lorenzo di Almagro, best known for running the San Lorenzo soccer team of which Pope Francis is an avid fan.

The New York-based Trump, along with business partner Alessandro Proto, has sent a statement of interest to San Lorenzo, a source close to the candidate said.

A spokesperson for the club told The Post on Thursday that no official bid has been made.

“Obviously for (Mr. Trump) it would be a great goal!” said the source, who cautioned that “for the moment, it is only the first phase.”

Trump and Proto — an Italian real estate mogul said to be the inspiration for Christian Grey, the title character in “Fifty Shades of Grey” — had earlier attempted to buy Colombia’s Atletico Nacional, bidding $100 million.

As first reported in The Post, their bid was rejected, with Trump walking away from the Colombian side’s counteroffer of $150 million.

“National wants $150 million to sell the club. For us, the proposal is unacceptable. Maybe they think we’re stupid,’’ Trump said at the time, adding that they would continue to look for other potential targets.

Sources told The Post that search has led them to San Lorenzo, one of the five biggest teams in Argentina.

San Lorenzo won last year’s Copa Libertadores as South America’s best team, and just sold 25-year-old midfielder Gonzalo Veron to the New York Red Bulls earlier this summer for a reported $2.2 million.

The team also has some well-known fans.

San Lorenzo’s players played with their No. 1 fan Pope Francis’ photo on their shirts during an Argentine league match against Colon de Santa Fe on March 16, 2013, a connection that raises the question of what owning the pope’s team would be worth to Trump in political capital.

Actor Viggo Mortensen, who plays Aragorn in the “Lord of the Rings” films, is another famous fan after spending part of his youth in Argentina.

In June, Trump alienated many Latinos by claiming of Mexico, “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.’’

Apparently when he looks south of the border, he also sees profit.

Proto has sold real estate to Tom Cruise, Leonardo Di Caprio, Madonna, Brad Pitt and Prince William, and The Post was the first to report that he’d sold his Manhattan loft to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo for $18.5 million.
