RBC Canadian Open to include par-3 hole featuring a hockey rink – CBSSports.com

The RBC Canadian Open is, last time I checked, still a golf tournament, but it will have a twist of hockey when it is played at the end of July this year.

That’s because the event will include a par-3 hole enclosed in hockey boards, bleachers and a Zamboni. The 7th at Glen Abbey Golf Club will be set up as a golf hole in a hockey arena, which is perfect considering the deep tradition of both sports in this country.

“We’re very excited to bring The Rink to life,” RBC Canadian Open Tournament Director Brent McLaughlin said. “We wanted to create an experience that oozed Canadian. We know Canadians love hockey, and of course they love golf too. Combining rinks and links was a no-brainer.”

It really is kind of a cool sideshow to this event. It doesn’t touch too much of the actual play, but gives fans (especially kids) something to look forward to.

“The RBC Canadian Open has always been uniquely Canadian,” added Matt McGlynn, vice president of brand marketing for RBC. “We felt integrating The Rink into our Canadian-themed activation would be a perfect extension to the fan experience. We’re proud to support Golf Canada and make this Canadian tribute a reality, hopefully for many years to come.”

The tournament has been played at Glen Abbey in four of the past five years.
