6 can’t-miss sports events to watch this weekend – SB Nation

Don’t go outside. That’s your pro tip for the weekend. The heat index is above average for most of the country, humidity is turning everywhere into a sauna, and it’s just no fun. It’s OK, though, because we’ve got some sweet sports to keep you entertained throughout the weekend.

We’re hitting the business end of Wimbledon, and baseball is heating up after the All-Star break. Sprinkle in a little X-Games, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a sports sandwich to munch on.

WHAT TO WATCH

All times Eastern.

TENNIS

Venus Williams is trying for an incredible sixth Wimbledon title when she faces Garbine Muguruza on Saturday morning, starting at 9 a.m. on ESPN.

On the men’s side, Roger Federer will face Marin Cilic to try and take his eighth Wimbledon crown. Sunday, 9 a.m. on ESPN.

GOLF

The American Century Championship is coming from Lake Tahoe! Some of sports’ biggest names, including Stephen Curry and Aaron Rodgers, are up against the likes of Justin Timberlake this year, making it a must-watch.

The ACC airs from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, then 3-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday on NBCSN.

MLB

We’ve got a Yankees vs. Red Sox series this weekend, which means baseball’s best rivalry on Sunday Night Baseball. The Sox are first in the AL East, the Yankees are just 3 1/2 games back, and this series really could define the division for the race to the playoffs. This is going to be good. Sunday night, ESPN 8 p.m.

SOCCER

The USMNT have their last group stage match in the Gold Cup against Nicaragua on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. on Univision and FXX. The U.S. needs a win to ensure a move on to the quarterfinals and to avoid leaving their fate in the hands of Panama vs. Martinique, which happens earlier in the day.

CYCLING

The Tour de France is coming down to an exciting finish. Chris Froome, winner of three of the last four Tours, lost the yellow jersey on Thursday and struggled to take it back on a short, steep Stage 13 on Friday. Fabio Aru has it now, but he also doesn’t have many teammates left to help him.

Saturday and Sunday’s stages won’t be the most decisive, but entering the final week, every second is precious. Every stage of the Tour is a must-watch from now on. Coverage begins on Saturday and Sunday morning, starting at 8 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. respectively on NBC Sports.

X GAMES

The best action sports stars in the world are competing for X-Games medals and cash in BMX, Skateboard, and Moto X disciplines. Over the weekend, the Moto X Best Trick and Skateboard Street Finals will highlight the action.

Live coverage is on the ABC family of networks throughout the weekend. The BMX Park final begins on Saturday at 1 p.m. on ABC, and then action moves over to ESPN where the Moto X Step Up Final, Skateboard Street Final and Best Trick will air from 3 p.m. onward.

Sunday sees action return to ESPN beginning at 1 p.m.

WHAT TO READ

The 17776 odyssey concludes on Saturday as Jon Bois has created a vision of the future, and football unlike anything you’ve read (or seen) before.
