“Aston Villa’s football board plans to meet on Wednesday to formulate the next stage in the move to appoint a new manager.

“Almost a fortnight after Remi Garde left the club, the board has a shortlist but next the respective claims of the candidates will be scrutinised by the four members together – chairman David Bernstein, Lord King, Adrian Bevington and former Villa player and chairman, Brian Little.

Could one of these men manage Aston Villa next?

“I understand no one has been approached yet, but the leading candidates remain David Moyes, Nigel Pearson, Steve Bruce, Mick McCarthy, Sean Dyche and Simon Grayson, who played twice for Little at Leicester and Villa.

“All the favoured candidates fulfill the fundamental criteria – British and with experience of the Championship, although in the case of Moyes, that was more than a decade ago with Preston.”
