Inevitably some took offence, with many seeing it as just the latest manifestation of Mr Trump’s sexism rather than a demonstration of diplomatic courtesy.

Julie Bishop, the Australian foreign minister, was the latest to voice her disapproval.

“I wonder if she could say the same of him?” she  told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, when asked whether she would be flattered or offended if the comment were directed at her.

“I’d be taken aback, I think. It’s a rather interesting comment to make,” she said.

Reebok its Twitter account to suggest when it might be appropriate to say “You’re in such good shape..beautiful.”

The company suggested that it was ill advised when working out next to a woman in a gym or sharing a lift.
