Andy Furillo: A’s fans won’t celebrate anniversary of big trade

A week from Friday marks a sad remembrance for A’s fans, the one-year anniversary of when their lively and winning team turned into a loser. They’ll mourn July 31, 2014, as the beginning of the end of Oakland’s most recent fun run, the day general manager Billy Beane traded popular outfielder Yoenis Cespedes for Boston pitcher Jon Lester. The deal was supposed to make the team a World Series contender. Instead, it was the beginning of the end of the A’s as we knew them.

49ers: Australian import Hayne faces tough task

The 49ers’ rookies don’t have to report for training camp until Monday, but some players – rookies and veterans alike – already are trickling in, including running back Jarryd Hayne of Australia. Not only is he learning a new sport, he’s competing with a slew of talented running backs to make the squad. Where does that leave Hayne?

Giants: Belt, Posey, Cain deliver in win over Padres

Brandon Belt hits a tying solo home run in the sixth inning and Buster Posey a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh to lead the Giants to a 7-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. Matt Cain pitches six strong innings in his fourth start of the season for the defending World Series champions.
