1 dead, 3 injured after bus full of college baseball players causes pileup crash, troopers say – Orlando Sentinel
One person is dead and three others were injured after a bus full of college baseball players caused a pileup crash on Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The bus, which was carrying the Hiram College baseball team from Ohio, was driving south on Interstate 75 in Pasco County about 12:30 p.m., highway patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins said.
As lanes started to merge near mile marker 287, the driver of the bus, Shirley Jackson, 69, didn’t slow down, Gaskins said.
She rear ended a Lexus, which caused the Lexus to ram into the back of a Hyundai, Gaskins said.
The 81-year-old driver of the Lexus died at the scene of the accident. She hasn’t been identified but was traveling from Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Gaskins said.
Her passenger was airlifted to a local hospital and is in critical condition. She also hasn’t been identified.
Troopers said Amy Chadek, 45, the driver of the Hyundai, was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Jackson also had minor injuries.
None of the baseball players were hurt in the crash, troopers said.
The wreck caused the closure of southbound lanes on Interstate 75 for four hours. The road has since reopened.
