Police in Haverhill are boosting patrols after two people were shot in a basketball court next to a baseball field where young teenagers were playing.

Essex County District Attorney’s Office said police responded to Swasey Field around 4 p.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired.

“I thought someone was shooting off fireworks,” Tom Crockett, who was coaching baseball at the time said. “We just heard three bangs. We turned around looked at the basketball court and everybody was scattering.”

Larry O’Brien, president of Haverhill Senior Baseball, which was holding games at the field at the time, said the left fielder was probably 20 to 30 feet away from the shooting. “You don’t know where the bullets are going to go,” he said.

O’Brien said met with parents from both teams after the shooting. He said the league decided to cancel all spring and summer games scheduled for the field.

“They did not feel comfortable coming back down here,” O’Brien said. “I can understand that.”
