Brady Kahle is selling baseball cards and sports memorabilia to raise money for his friend Landen Palatino’s cancer treatment. “I thought it would be a good idea to sell some baseball cards and see if I could raise some money.”
The two boys play baseball in the same league but different divisions. Brady is a catcher; Landen plays outfield and third base.
Brady has already raised over $4,000 at the Cards and Collectibles show, which is held at the Chicopee Boys & Girls Club regularly.
Over the past month, there’s been an outpouring of support and donations from residents, card collectors, Major League Baseball teams and sports figures. One donor gave Brady a Roberto Clemente bat found at a tag sale.
Mark Hartley of Palmer said, “My daughter had Hodgkins Lymphoma, so a lot of people did a lot for her, so do something for him. For his friend.”
Brady came up with the idea to sell his cards by himself but the hobby was inherited. Brady’s grandfather, Jim Kahle, told 22News, “I got Brady into it when he was about three, and in fact I think he learned to read from baseball cards.”
Brady’s 6-year-old sister Zoe has also been selling $5 love for Landen bracelets.
Mother Jesse Kahle told 22News she’s thankful for all the support for Landen. “People who are praying and thinking of Landen and keeping him in their thoughts, and just everyone who’s helped to donate, because we’re going to be able to keep this going a long time with so many kind people that are out there helping.”
The boys’ mothers went to high school together, and have been friends ever since.
Landen’s mother, Tina Palatino, said, “I am taking unpaid leave from work, so all these donations are helping me to be able to stay home with him. He’s been in treatment every single day, Monday through Friday, so it helps. We’re going into Hartford for treatment.”
On April 21st Brady and Landen have been invited by the Red Sox for a recognition ceremony before a ball game.
