All-girls baseball tournament to take place in Cumming this weekend – Atlanta Journal Constitution

An all-girls 12U baseball tournament will take place this weekend in Cumming, which could be the first of its kind in the state.

The tournament, called the “Southeastern Girls Baseball Showcase” will take place at Dobbins Park which is in the City of Cumming:

The games will be played at 9am/11am/2pm both Saturday and Sunday. The tournament, open to the public, is free.

Three teams participating—a Georgia team, along with a team from Washington, D.C., and one from North Carolina. The goal is to showcase girls who play baseball while creating opportunities for them to play, and to show girls are serious about playing baseball, not just softball.

And while the number of girls playing baseball remains tiny, they are determined to break the gender barrier. Justine Siegal, a female baseball coach who was the first woman to throw batting practice for a Major League Baseball team, recently made history again by becoming the first woman to coach men’s professional baseball. She recently hired as guest instructor for the Oakland Athletics. Siegal created the nonprofit Baseball for All, advocating for girls having the opportunity to play baseball. The organization runs girls baseball camps and tournaments in Florida.
