Arizona State beats Huskies to even baseball series – The Seattle Times

Arizona State’s baseball team earned a come-from-behind 6-3 victory over visiting Washington on Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Huskies starter Joe De­Mers (2-2) allowed four runs on 12 hits in six innings. First baseman John Naff went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in for Washington (15-11, 6-5 Pac-12).

The win allowed Arizona State (17-11, 4-7) to even the three-game series at a game apiece.

AJ Graffanino also drove in a run for the Huskies and Jack Meggs had two hits.

Colby Woodmansee connected on a two-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Sun Devils at 4-3 lead. David Greer hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Seattle University (20-9, 8-0) swept a doubleheader from host North Dakota (5-17, 2-6), winning 7-5 and 12-6, to remain the only undefeated team in the Western Athletic Conference.

In the first game, Michael McCann hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning to put the Redhawks in the lead. Griffin Andreychuk had three hits and drove in a run. Sheldon Stober had two hits and an RBI.

In game two, Brock Carpenter went 3 for 6 with three RBI for the Redhawks. Lucas Denney had three hits and scored three runs. Andreychuk, Max Modeste, Jeffrey Morgan and Dalton Hurd each drove in two runs.

Softball

Western Washington split its doubleheader at Western Oregon, winning 7-4 in the first game and falling 5-4 in extra innings in the second game in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

The Vikings moved to 22-19 overall and 11-11 in league play.

Makinlee Sellevold earned the pitching win in the first game with a complete-game effort and helped her cause by going 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Second baseman Kali Patterson went 5 for 8 for the day.

Women’s tennis

Host Gonzaga lost 4-1 to Pepperdine. The Bulldogs (14-3, 4-2 West Coast Conference) got their point by winning doubles.

Women’s rowing

Western Washington won six of eight races at the Collegiate Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake south of Eugene. Western’s varsity eight, varsity four and novice-four teams swept their events.

Seattle U finished fifth in both varsity-eight races.

Women’s golf

Washington senior Charlotte Thomas carded a 1-under 71 on day two of the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., and now sits at even-par 144, which is tied for 12th heading into the final 18 holes.

Washington shot a 2-over 290, moving its two-round total to 12-over 588, which is good for eighth place.

Washington posted 10 birdies Saturday, led by Thomas’ four, as the Huskies sit 20 strokes off the team lead, held by third-ranked UCLA at 8-under 568. No. 11 Arizona State is second at 7-under 569 while No. 1 Alabama is at 2-under 574 for third.

Freshman Sarah Rhee matched Thomas’ 1-under 71. Rhee is tied for 28th at 2-over 146. Senior Ying Luo is tied for 37th at 5-over 149 after posting a 3-over 75.

Washington State had a 10-over 298 and is 12th overall at 23-over 599. Sophomore Alivia Brown and senior Nani Yanagi are tied for 45th at 7-over 151.

Track and field

Washington won nine events at the Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Against a field that included Oregon, USC and Penn State, the Huskies won every distance race from 1,500 meters up.

A crowd of 5,423 fans at the Hayward season opener saw the Huskies cross the line first in six races, along with three wins in the field events. The team battles were close throughout, with the Oregon women getting the win with 173 points, Penn State second at 166 and the Huskies third with 164, ahead of USC (134). Penn State and Oregon tied for the men’s title with 181.5 points. UW was third with 168 ahead of USC with 94.
