Arkansas baseball wins six-hour game that ends at 3:10 a.m. to save its season – CBSSports.com
It isn’t often that a game scheduled to start in the afternoon ends at 3 in the morning.
Arkansas and Missouri State defied logic, by playing a game that did exactly that.
It was a strange night all the way through, a six-hour romp that included a reset in the third inning — at 12:35 a.m. The Razorbacks were ultimately victorious, forcing a winner-take all match against Southern Missouri on Monday Night in the Fayetteville Regional.
The final score ended up being 11-10 in favor of Arkansas. Emotions ran high throughout the game, including a point at 2:30 in the morning when the rain began to pick up again.
The 1,000 remaining fans and both dugouts lost it when the umpires convened to discuss another delay. The delay likely would have meant death for the Razorbacks, and the umpires ultimately decided to allow play to continue, much to the chagrin of Southern Missouri manager Keith Guttin.
“I don’t think games should be decided in the rain at 3 a.m.,” Guttin said of the circus in his postgame conference.
“That was one of the greatest games I’ve ever been a part of,” said Jared Gates, per the Washington Post. Gates had a two-run home run to put Arkansas up 11-8 in the eighth.
Ultimately, the end result is a chance to take the regional for Arkansas. Both teams will play at 6 p.m. on Monday (weather permitting) for a chance to go to super regionals. And sometimes, all that a team really needs is a chance.
