AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn baseball battled back from deficits three times, but came up short 7-6 to Alabama on Saturday at Plainsman Park.
“The guys fought back really well and came back and took the lead in the sixth and tied it up again in the seventh,” Auburn head coach Sunny Golloway said. “We just never could really build momentum. We were pitching up in the bullpen and that’s two nights in a row we were up in the zone. They’ve got a lineup that will hurt you if you are up in the zone.”
Alabama (27-24, 10-16) held a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning when Daniel Robert came up with a clutch double for Auburn to score Kyler Deese and Melvin Gray. Damon Haecker followed with run-scoring single to right to bring in Robert for a 3-1 Auburn lead.
The Crimson Tide came back with four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead.
Rocky McCord was replaced in the inning after allowing a walk and an infield single. All three run-scoring hits came off reliever Justin Camp who enter with one out in the frame.
McCord threw 6.1 innings but allowed 10 hits and three runs. He struck out three with three walks.
Auburn (32-19, 12-14) wasn’t done as Cody Nulph hit his first home run since February 27 over the wall in left to tie the game at five in the bottom of the seventh. The homer scored Sam Gillikin who had draw a walk to start the inning.
The Tide struck again off Camp in the eighth with a pair of runs for a 7-5 lead including RBI’s by Georgie Salem and Mikey White.
White and Overstreet both had three hits.
Camp (2-1) took the loss with four earned on seven hits in 2.2 innings.
Auburn got one back in the eighth on a bases-loaded infield single from Jackson Burgreen to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Haecker and Burgreen had two hits, while Robert and Nulph each had two RBIs.
Jay Shaw improved to 2-0 with one inning of relief. Alabama starter Jake Walters pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three runs (zero earned) with six strikeouts.
Thomas Burrows recorded his fifth save.
There was an 18 minute delay in the bottom of the seventh inning to tend to injured Alabama first baseman Chance Vincent. He was injured in a collision with right fielder Casey Hughston and was taken off the field in an ambulance.
Auburn and Alabama wrap the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Auburn’s three seniors will be honored in a ceremony before first pitch.
