Baseball: Georgia 6, Georgia Tech 0 – Atlanta Journal Constitution

A brief recap of Georgia’s 6-0 victory over Georgia Tech at Turner Field on Tuesday night:

How the game was won: A three-run home run to right-center field by first baseman Daniel Nichols – his sixth homer of the season — gave Georgia a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning. Nichols also drove in the Bulldogs’ first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and their final run with a single in the ninth. He had three hits for the night, and his five RBIs were a career high. Meanwhile, five Georgia pitchers — starter Jared Walsh and relievers Mike Mancuso, Bo Tucker, Taylor Hicks and Jared Cheek — combined on a one-hitter. Tech’s only hit was a fourth-inning single by second baseman Wade Bailey.

Number: 44. That’s how many years it has been since Georgia was swept by Georgia Tech in one school year in football, men’s basketball and baseball. It last happened in 1970-71. It would have happened again in 2014-15 if Tech had won Tuesday night. But Georgia’s victory salvaged for the Bulldogs a split of the season series in baseball after the Yellow Jackets won in Athens in March and a scheduled game at Tech last month was rained out.

What’s next: Georgia Tech completes its regular season with a three-game ACC series at Miami on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Georgia completes its regular season with a three-game SEC series against Arkansas in Athens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The ACC and SEC tournaments are next week.
