Baseball player’s pastor mom among the victims in Charleston – WSOC Charlotte

The Rev. Sharonda Singleton was a celebrated track and field coach for Goose Creek High School and revered as a “positive light” to all who knew her, according to the South Carolina High School League.

She had three children. Her oldest child, Chris Singleton, is a baseball player at Charleston Southern University.

On Wednesday night Singleton tweeted, “Something extremely terrible has happened to my mom tonight, please pray for her and my family. Pray asap.”

Two minutes later he sent the following tweet.

Thursday, Rev. Singleton’s son retweeted a series of messages, one including a screen shot of an Instagram post.

“In this picture there are two new Angels in the sky. One of them happens to be my mommy. It’s funny how I always told you that you went to church too much. You would laugh it off and say, ‘Boy you can never have too much of the Lord.’”

In the Instagram post Singleton also said he knew he would have to stay strong for his little brother and sister.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and his immediate family and with our entire CSU baseball family,” Charleston Southern baseball coach Stuart Lake said in a tweet Thursday.

The CSU baseball team gathered at Collins Park in North Charleston Thursday at 8 p.m. to pray for Chris Singleton.

At the gathering, Lake said the toughest thing would be not having Sharonda Singleton there to yell at umpires and call his players “baby.”

Chris Singleton spoke after the prayer concluded and said he knows his mom is smiling.

Players gathered around Chris Singleton for a final prayer before the vigil concluded. “Love conquers hate” was said in the concluding prayer.
