Baseball roundup: Nationals rally to beat Cubs in 12 innings – STLtoday.com
Nationals top Cubs 5-4 in 12 innings
Jayson Werth singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the Washington Nationals a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. He hit a liner off the wall in center field to score Michael Taylor, who hit an RBI single earlier in the inning. Addison Russell gave the Cubs the lead with a run-scoring single off Yusmeiro Petit in the top of the inning.
The wild finish came long after starters Stephen Strasburg (Washington) and Jason Hammel (Chicago) dueled, both allowing one run in seven innings of work.
“The two best teams in baseball going at it, exchanging punches,” Hammel said. “It was exciting. We had our chances to do it and they answered back. … An October preview, maybe.”
