Baseball roundup: Reds hand Pirates first loss – STLtoday.com
Reds send Pirates to first loss this year
Eugenio Suarez drove in three runs, with a single and a homer, to help Cincinnati hand visiting Pittsburgh its first loss, 5-1 on Saturday. Pittsburgh’s 4-0 start was its best since 2003. Suarez had an RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the seventh, his team-leading third of the season. He also scored three times.
At 4-0, Pittsburgh was off to its best start since 2003. The Pirates also had their top starter making his debut — Gerrit Cole was pushed back in the rotation after developing a sore ribcage during spring training. He gave up three runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Cubs 4, Diamondbacks 2 • Kris Bryant doubled twice and Ben Zobrist had three hits to lift visiting Chicago. New Arizona ace Zack Greinke (0-2) gave up three runs in the first inning.
Dodgers 3, Giants 2 • Charlie Culberson hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning to lift visiting Los Angeles. Earlier, San Francisco pitcher Madison Bumgarner homered off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Padres 16, Rockies 3 • Matt Kemp homered twice and drove in six runs as visiting San Diego won and ended Trevor Story’s home run streak. Story, who has hit six since making his debut for Colorado on opening day, was the first big leaguer to homer in each of his first four games.
“It was probably over the plate a little too much. He hit it pretty good,” Kershaw said. “Any time you give up a home run to the pitcher, it doesn’t feel good. It’s supposed to be the easiest out you have. He’s a little different, obviously.”
Phillies 1, Mets 0 • Vince Velasquez struck out a career-high nine over six innings and Ryan Howard homered to vault visiting Philadelphia.
Postponement • The scheduled Marlins-Nationals game in Washington was postponed because of cold weather (the wind chill was predicted to be in the upper 20s) and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on May 14.
AMERICAN LEAUGE
Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 4 • Dustin Pedroia had three hits and two RBIs to spark visiting Boston. The Red Sox have scored at least six runs and had at least 10 hits in all four games this season. Toronto’s Jose Bautista hit two homers.
Royals 7, Twins 0 • Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain and Kendrys Morales homered and three pitchers combined on the shutout as host Kansas City prevailed. New Royals starter Ian Kennedy scattered five hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Yankees 8, Tigers 4 • Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran homered to boost visiting New York in CC Sabathia’s return. He allowed three runs and four hits in six innings in his first start since missing the postseason last year while undergoing alcohol rehabilitation.
White Sox 7, Indians 3 • Avisail Garcia’s three-run home run in the decisive seventh inning powered host Chicago, as ace Chris Sale overcame two homers to win.
A’s 6, Mariners 1 • Rich Hill struck out 10 and Josh Reddick homered to propel visiting Oakland.
Rangers 4, Angels 1 • Adrian Beltre homered and doubled twice to boost visiting Texas.
Postponement • Tampa Bay’s game scheduled for Baltimore was rained out and no makeup date was set.
