Baseball roundup: Reds upend Cubs – STLtoday.com

Zack Cozart and Jay Bruce homered to help visiting Cincinnati beat Chicago 9-5 on Tuesday to gain just its second victory over the Cubs in 12 games this season.

“Everybody wants to beat the Cubs,” said Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton, who had two hits and scored two runs. “They’re the best team in baseball. We know we can beat those guys. This was a big day for us.”

Cubs starting pitcher John Lackey allowed six runs — five earned — six hits and five walks in six innings, dropping to 0-3 in his most recent five starts. And Chicago manager Joe Maddon was ejected for arguing a ball-strike call with plate umpire Jerry Meals.

“It was pretty much the culmination of other calls that were going against us recently at the plate,” Maddon said. “I think it kind of boiled over in that moment. I haven’t had a day off in a while.”

Chicago’s Addison Russell homered twice and teammate Kris Bryant, who left Monday’s game after being shaken up in a collision in the outfield, was back in the lineup and hit his major league-leading 25th homer.

Marlins 5, Mets 2 • Giancarlo Stanton hit two long homers and matched his career high with five RBIs, powering visiting Miami to a victory that snapped New York’s winning streak at five games.

“I still don’t believe that I’m here again. I’m happy,” Reyes said before the game. “Like I said, coming back here, it feels like I’m home.”
