Baseball writers’ dinner set for next Sunday – STLtoday.com

Star center fielder Jim Edmonds, league championship series Most Valuable Player Jeff Suppan and Cardinals leader in career saves Jason Isringhausen will be among the members of the 2006 World Series champion Cardinals to be honored next Sunday night at the 58th St. Louis Baseball Writers’ Dinner at the Marriott Grand.

Suppan, who won his award for his pitching in the league championship series victory over the New York Mets in 2006, will be joined on the dais, among others, by 2006 World Series MVP David Eckstein and Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa.

Current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and his closer, Trevor Rosenthal, will be honored as St. Louis Baseball Men of the Year.

The DeWitt ownership family will receive the second annual “Red” medal, a writers’ award for “invaluable service to baseball” in honor of Cardinals Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst. At that point, the DeWitt family will have been involved in professional baseball for 100 years.

Bill DeWitt Jr., is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Cardinals and Bill De Witt III is the president of a club which has reached the playoffs 12 times in the last 16 seasons.

Several members of the 2015 Cardinals’ team which won 100 games and the National League Central Division title will be feted, including reliever Mitch Harris, the first Naval Academy graduate to reach the majors in nearly 100 years.

Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, a St. Louis native who died last year, will be honored with a meritorious service award to be accepted by members of his family. KMOX Radio will broadcast the dinner, to be emceed by Jon Rooney, with the program set to start about 7:25. Dinner will be at 6:30.
