Baseball writers to honor ’67 champion Cardinals – STLtoday.com


The 1967 World Series champion Cardinals will be feted on the 50-year anniversary of that championship at the 59th St. Louis Baseball Writers’ dinner at the Union Station Hotel on Jan. 15.

Among the 1967 Cardinals slated to be in attendance are Hall of Fame players Bob Gibson and Lou Brock; Hall of fame manager Red Schoendienst; catcher Tim McCarver, who in is the broadcast wing of the Hall of Fame; longtime Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon, the third baseman on that club; outfielders Bobby Tolan and Ted Savage and pitcher Dick Hughes. Others will be announced later.

Cardinals Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog will receive the Red Medal, named for Schoendienst and given for “invaluable service” to baseball.

Also to be saluted are several players from the 2016 Cardinals, including St. Louis Baseball Man of the Year Carlos Martinez. Others to be honored are Stephen Piscotty, Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina, Aledmys Diaz, Seung Hwan Oh, Jedd Gyorko, Matt Carpenter and Jonathan Broxton, the last of whom will receive the Darryl Kile award.

Longtime Cardinals star Matt Holliday, who has become a free agent, will receive a meritorious service to sports award.

Tickets are priced at $150 apiece and $175 if coupled with a pass to the Cardinals’ Winter Warm-Up, which will take place that weekend. Tables of 10 can be reserved for a cost of $1,500.
