Civil War baseball: Oregon State at Oregon; Ducks win 3-2 – Statesman Journal
EUGENE – Late arriving crowd for tonight’s Civil War baseball game between Oregon (22-9, 5-4 Pac-12) and Oregon (19-15, 2-7) at PK Park.
Right-hander Andrew Moore (3-1, 1.63) from North Eugene High School on the hill for the Beavers. In his last two Pac-12 starts, Moore has given up no earned runs in 15 innings.
Can the light-hitting Ducks (.253 team batting average) get to Moore? Stay tuned.
The Ducks win 3-2 in the bottom ninth inning on a walk-off walk. Read on to see how it developed.
I’ll be posting updates throughout the game.
First inning: Jeff Hendrix led off with an infield, and the Beavers had runners at the corners with two outs. But Cole Irvin retired Joe Gillette on a fly ball to end the inning.
Moore has flourished as the Beavers’ Friday night starter. He retired the Ducks in order in the bottom of the first with a strikeout. The fastball/changeup have been working for him this season.
Second inning: Irvin, who missed last season following Tommy John surgery, hasn’t returned to 2013 form when he was 12-3 with a 2.48 ERA. But he’s looking good tonight with two shutout innings.
The Ducks have not come close to getting their first hit off Moore.
Third inning: I know it’s early and I’m going to violate a baseball taboo. Moore is perfect through three innings with three strikeouts.
OSU has three infield hits and nothing to show for it.
Fourth inning: Irvin overpowered OSU in the top of the frame with two strikeouts. Ditto for Moore, who finally gave up his first hit on Jakob Goldfarb’s one-out single to left. He was quickly erased on a double play.
Not much offense so far. Karaoke between innings seems to have fan’s interest as much as the game.
Fifth inning: Oregon State strikes first on Trevor Morrison’s two-out RBI single to right on an 0-2 pitch. Morrison in the nine-hole with a .330 batting average.
Ducks answer with Scott Heineman’s one-out double down the left field line, the game’s first extra base hit. Moore should have gotten out of the inning, but third baseman Michael Gretler’s throwing error allowed Heineman to score the tying run.
Popcorn in the press box is extremely salty, but I keep getting refills. Munchies and baseball go hand and hand.
Sixth inning: Not exactly quality base-running by the Beavers. Caleb Hamilton was thrown out attempting to steal second on excellent throw by catcher Josh Graham.
But after Gabe Clark’s single, he gets doubled up running on an infield pop up.
Note to Clark: There was only one out. Mental errors do no sit well with coach Pat Casey.
More issues in the field for OSU.
With Oregon’s Matt Eureste caught in a rundown between first and second, shortstop Morrison threw the ball away for the Beavers’ second error. To be fair, Morrison has a .987 fielding percentage and that was just his third miscue of the season.
With runners on first and second and two outs, Phil Craig-St. Louis hit a drive down the left field line that was just foul. He grounded out to first to end the threat.
Seventh inning: Irvin works into the seventh for the first time this season, and despite giving up three hits in the frame OSU fails to score.
Credit Ducks center fielder Austin Grebeck for a defensive gem. With runners on first and second and one out, Gretler singled to center but Kyle Noback was nailed at the plate on Grebeck’s excellent throw.
Meanwhile, Moore has a two hitter intact, but it wasn’t an easy inning. Moore walked and hit a batter, but with two outs Grebeck lined out to first.
Eighth inning: After hitting Hendrix to open the inning, Irvin was relieved by Stephen Nogosek and Hendrix advanced to second on a wild pitch.
KJ Harrison’s two-out bloop single to right center, the Beavers’ 10th hit of the game, scored Hendrix with the go-ahead run.
After getting the lead-off hitter to open the eighth, Moore was relieved by Luke Heimlich with a 1-0 count on Mitchell Tolman. Moore matched his season high with 122 pitches.
OSU came through with a defensive gem to maintain its 2-1 lead.
With a runner on second and two down, Phil Craig-St. Louis’ sinking liner to left was caught by a diving Kyle Nobach.
Book is closed on Moore: 7 1/3 innings, two hits, one unearned run, seven strikeouts and three walks.
Ninth inning: No matter who wins, I’m not pulling for extra frames. We’re about to hit the three-hour mark.
Beavers have two down and a runner on second. Oregon coach George Horton opts for the lefty-lefty matchup. Garrett Cleavinger comes in to face Hendrix.
Last chance time for Ducks, trailing 2-1 in bottom of the ninth.
Well, it seems fitting that OSU would squander a chance to win with shoddy fielding.
With two outs and runners on first and second, second baseman Caleb Hamilton mishanded Grebeck’s grounder and then threw it away for two errors, allowing pinch runner J.B. Bryant to score the tying run.
Mitch Hickey relieved Heimlich with the bases loaded to face pinch hitter Kyle Kasser.
On a 3-2 count, Kasser took ball four and the Ducks prevail 3-2.
The Beavers had twice as many errors (four) as Oregon had hits. Baseball is a funny game.
Game 2 of the Civil War series will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. OSU (22-10, 5-5 Pac-12) sends Drew Rasmussen (3-2, 2.39) to the hill. Oregon (20-15, 3-7) expected to start David Peterson (2-4, 4.91).
Looking forward to listening to my new Mark Knopfler CD on the drive back to Salem.
