CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Indians have re-organized their baseball operations department to match a growing trend around the big leagues.
Chris Antonetti, after five years as general manager, has been promoted to president of baseball operations. Mike Chernoff, who just completed his 12th season with the Indians, has been promoted to general manager. Derek Falvey, who has been with the organization for eight years, has been named assistant general manager.
Antonetti, 41, will still be the top decision on the baseball side of the Indians organization. He became general manager after the 2010 season after nine years as assistant general manager.
Chernoff, 34, has been Antonetti’s assistant general manager for the last five years. He joined the Indians in 2003 after graduating from Princeton.
Falvey, 32, has been the Indians director of baseball operations for the last four years. He joined the Indians in 2007.
These moves follow the departure of President Mark Shapiro, the new CEO of the Toronto Blue Jays. Owner Paul Dolan said the promotions are aimed strictly as the baseball side of the organization and will not affect the business operations.
“Across our industry, job responsibilities in baseball operations have expanded considerably over the last 10 years and these moves reflect a structure that a number of other teams have recently adopted,” said Dolan in a statement. “Chris will continue to work closely with Tito (manager Terry Francona), overseeing the direction of all our baseball decision-making, wile Mike and Derek now hold titles that better align with the responsibilities they have already largely assumed in our on-going efforts to develop members of our organization.”
