Although the full bracket encompasses the best teams remaining, one side is certainly tougher than the other.
The bottom half features four different No. 1 seeds from their respective regionals, and all except for LSU had to beat fellow No. 1 seeds to advance to this point. Each squad is not only filled with talent, but has also been battle-tested to get to this point.
LSU represents the favorite as the No. 2 overall seed after UCLA was knocked out in the opening round. The key to its success is the offense, which ranked fourth in the nation with a .316 overall batting average.
After being held scoreless for six innings against Louisiana-Lafayette in the super regional, the squad showed what it could do with six runs in the final three innings, including four in the eighth to help in the win. Aaron Fitt of D1 Baseball noted this was to be expected:
You can only hold that #LSU offense down for so long. Eventually they’re going to have a big inning. Kudos to Cajuns for hanging in a while.

Of course, the Tigers aren’t the only ones with the skill to reach the finals. Possibly the biggest competition will be Vanderbilt, which had a pretty big day for the program Monday. Not only did the defending national champions beat Illinois to advance to the College World Series, but shortstop Dansby Swanson was also the No. 1 pick in the MLB draft.
Obviously, the players were extremely supportive:
Dansby Swanson’s Vanderbilt teammates sure were happy to see him go No. 1. https://t.co/IFAANld9G4

It would be a real treat if the Commodores get to face LSU at some point this round, as it would represent an excellent battle of shortstops between Swanson and Alex Bregman, the first and second overall picks in the draft.
That said, either CS Fullerton or TCU can do damage as well, after each needed extra innings to advance in their deciding games last round. Both teams have displayed a lot of heart and will not quit easily.
On the other side of the bracket, Virginia and Arkansas have each had surprising runs, though they shouldn’t be overlooked. Still, the real team to watch out for is Florida after going 5-0 in the first two rounds to cruise into the CWS.
The Gators made a quality Florida State pitching staff look like nothing, with 24 runs in two games, including a two-home run showing by JJ Schwarz in the clincher. Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan had great things to say about his power-hitting freshman, via Mark Long of the Associated Press:
He’s really caught fire here. This is what happens. If you’re going to win a championship, a couple guys just got to really get hot. Obviously, he’s kind of getting to that point where he’s carrying us a little bit right now. …He’s just a really special player, a special hitter, a special catcher, and he’s put together quite the year.
With Schwarz coming through with big hits in the middle of the lineup and the pitching staff doing enough to stay on top, the Gators could be able to outlast an elite Miami offense that led the country in runs this season.
In all likelihood, these two Sunshine State rivals will likely play at least two, and maybe three, times in what should be a competitive upcoming round.
