Michael Wilson, a rising senior from Colonia High School, has made a nonbinding commitment to continue his baseball career at Stony Brook University.

“I’m really excited for him and very proud of him,” said Colonia baseball coach Vinny Esposito, who noted that Wilson also had offers from Marist and St. Peter’s and was being recruited by other schools including Rutgers.

“I expressed to him that as the summer went along a lot more teams were going to be interested in him. He said he definitely wanted to play at a high Division I level and in a good conference, and I think Stony Brook provides that for him.”

As America East Conference regular-season and tournament champions in 2012, Stony Brook advanced to the College World Series, where it lost to Florida State and UCLA. Stony Brook reached the NCAA Regional earlier this year.

Wilson’s 2015 season was cut short due to an injury. Despite missing almost half the campaign, Wilson batted .429 with 18 hits, 10 RBI, 10 runs, five homers and four doubles.

“I think he’s the best hitter in the county and one of the best in the state,” Esposito said.

Wilson played shortstop in 2015 and third base the previous year for Colonia. He is currently playing outfield and pitching for Full Count Baseball this summer, according to Esposito.

Esposito, who starred at Rutgers University and later player minor league baseball, said he believes Wilson projects as a third baseman in college but is unsure at this juncture what plans Stony Brook may have for his star player.

“I think he’s going to land on his feet in college as a third baseman because he’s got really good hands and a really good arm,” Esposito said, “but I could be wrong.”
