Derek Jeter on baseball: ‘To be honest with you, I don’t miss it at all’ – CBSSports.com
For the first time in more than two decades, Derek Jeter is not playing baseball this April. He hung up his spikes last season and so far has remained under the radar during the early days of his retirement. There’s a random photo here and there, but that’s all.
On Wednesday, during a radio interview with SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio, Jeter admitted he doesn’t miss baseball at all right now. Here’s the quote, via Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News:
“To be honest with you, I don’t miss it at all,” Jeter said Wednesday during an interview on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio. “It was the right time for me. I’m content with what I’m doing now.
“I miss my teammates. You play with guys a long time, but I keep in touch with a few of them. I do not miss the long hours, the working out. It’s a full-time job. I’m glad that I’ve moved on.”
…
“I needed to get away from it for a while,” Jeter said. “I didn’t go to spring training; I was not even in Florida for most of spring training. They’re retiring a lot of my former teammates’ numbers this year and I’m pretty sure I’ll be up there for the festivities.”
Sounds exactly like what we usually hear from a just retired superstar. Jeter misses the camaraderie but not the grind. I get it. Baseball’s hard and I’m sure it’s refreshing to be away.
The Yankees are retiring three numbers this season but not Jeter’s — his No. 2 will inevitably be retired at some point soon. Jorge Posada (No. 20), Andy Pettitte (No. 46) and Bernie Williams (No. 51) will have their numbers retired this summer.
