DeWitts to be honored at baseball writers’ dinner – STLtoday.com

The DeWitt family will be honored with the second annual “Red” medal, at the 58th St. Louis Baseball Writers’ dinner on Jan. 17 at the Marriott Grand Hotel in downtown St. Louis.

The “Red” award is given for longtime service to baseball in honor of Cardinals Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst. At that point, the DeWitt family will have been involved in professional baseball for 100 years.

Bill DeWitt Jr., is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Cardinals and Bill DeWitt III is the president of a club that has reached the playoffs 12 times in the last 16 seasons.

Also to be saluted are members from the 2006 Cardinals World Series championship club — which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016. The MVP of that Series, David Eckstein, is to be on hand. So are members of the 2015 Cardinals team that won 100 games and the National League Central Division title.

Former New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra, a St. Louis native who died this year, will be honored with a meritorious service award to be accepted by members of his family.

An added feature for the night is the introduction of a special menu as commissioned by the BBWAA’s men of the year, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and closer Trevor Rosenthal, as an alternative for the regular dinner.

Tickets, priced at $150 each and $1,500 for tables of 10, are available online through the chapter’s website — StLouisBBWAA.com. They also can be secured by sending check or money order to St. Louis Chapter BBWAA Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 605, St. Louis, Mo., 63188-0605.

Tickets will be $160 for those who want the special dinner.

If customers wish to purchase a Cardinals Winter Warm-Up pass for that weekend in conjunction with a dinner ticket, the cost is $175 per person, obtainable by sending check or money order to the P.O. box. For those who want the special dinner and the Warm-Up pass, the price is $185 each.
