Last night was extremely frustrating for the Stephen Strasburg owners, myself included. There’s nothing that can be done about it, but it still hurts. You might have gotten flashbacks when you saw that Noah Syndergaard had been scratched, but there are positives to come of this. Most importantly, you now know not to roster Syndergaard.
Less obviously, there are many sites that price hitters depending on which pitcher they’re facing. That doesn’t seem to be the case with the Royals on FanDuel, but it certainly is on DraftKings. Bartolo Colon isn’t generally the type of pitcher I’d stack against, but I’ll work a few of the cheaper Royals into my lineup tonight if only because I’m getting them at a discount.
Starting Pitchers
Jose Fernandez ($12,000, $13,700)
You could make an argument that Fernandez is the second best pitcher in baseball. You could make an argument that the Braves are the worst offense in baseball. These two are a match that should make Fernandez the highest owned pitcher of the night by far. The only thing not to like is the Braves’ avoidance of strikeouts and likely high ownership.
Corey Kluber ($9,700, $11,600)
Until Noah Syndergaard was scratched, I thought Kluber might actually be under-owned. Now I’m afraid he may be the second highest owned pitcher on the slate. I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Kluber has the highest upside on the slate. The Rays strike out 25.1 percent of the time against righties, and Kluber is more likely to finish the game than Fernandez.
Aaron Nola ($9,000, $9,000)
Nola is my favorite tournament play on the slate. The Twins are a great matchup and exactly what Nola needs coming off back-to-back bad starts. The Twins rank 9th in wOBA against RHP and strike out in 22.5 percent of their plate appearances. Nola has faced four bottom 10 offenses this season and owns a 2.57 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with more than a strikeout per inning against them .
Stack Attack
Blue Jays vs. Diamondbacks
Patrick Corbin has been really tough on lefties, so I’ll probably leave Carrera and Saunders out of my stack tonight in favor of Troy Tulowizki and Russell Martin. This also helps make the cost of the stack more palatable. You can’t quite afford those two with Donaldson, Encarnacion and Jose Fernandez, so watch to see if Darwin Barney is in the lineup.
Orioles vs. Padres
This is the most questionable weather of the night, so you’ll want to keep an eye on the radar. Assuming this game plays, it may be the top stack of the night if only because the players are slightly cheaper than the Blue Jays. Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo are the obvious tournament plays. You can choose a righty or lefty for your cheap hitter as Luis Perdomo has been punished by both. He has given up a .454 wOBA to righties this year and a .384 to lefties.
Marlins vs. Braves
Bud Norris is the most proven bad pitcher on the slate, and that means something to me. His control problems have been magnified this season, as have his struggles against lefties (.390 wOBA). Derek Dietrich and Justin Bour are my favorite plays. I’d probably pair them up with Giancarlo Stanton, who is still under-priced, and Christian Yelich.
