And I thought there were a lot of good pitchers on Monday.
Tuesday brings us a game at Coors Field, 11 pitchers listed at $9,000 or more on FanDuel, and at least four others I could reasonably consider as top notch options.
In one way I love the slate because there are so many options, but it does feel a little bit more like a tournament evening than a great slate for cash games. I want to build 100 lineups, but narrowing it down to one to play in cash doesn’t sound like much fun.
For a slate this robust, the stacking options don’t feel great. Yeah, there’s a game in Colorado, but I’d rather stack the one in Detroit. That game befuddled me when Detroit was the favorite and now the money is coming in on the
Detroit Tigers
. For me that means I’ll probably just stack both sides.
Starting Pitchers
Carlos Carrasco
($10,100, $10,500)
I wonder if people are going to overlook Carrasco because of what the
Minnesota Twins
did to
Danny Salazar
last night. I’m not. Carrasco is a huge favorite (-200) and the Twins are still the Twins. I like the
Cleveland Indians
bats against
Kyle Gibson
and Carrasco’s K potential, even though it’s been down lately. Most of all, I like Carrasco’s price compared to Bumgarner, especially on DraftKings.
Madison Bumgarner
($11,800, $13,000)
I can understand the case for Bumgarner on FanDuel. He’s arguably been the best pitcher in baseball this year, he has a fantastic matchup and he’s the biggest favorite of the day. On DraftKings, it’s really tough because of his increase and price and the high volume of upside pitchers. I’ll probably fade him there.
Gerrit Cole
($9,500, $9,000)
There’s a little bit of confirmation bias and recency bias here. Cole is coming off of his best start of the year, which confirmed my belief that he could be one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball this season. He got off to a slow start due to injuries, but I see no reason I wouldn’t believe in him now. In a fantastic matchup with the
Atlanta Braves
, Cole is a nice zig off the pitchers above $10,000.
Stack Attack
There’s something fun about good pitchers at Coors Field. On Tuesday, I feel confident we have one and it’s possible we have two. I’m largely fading the
Los Angeles Dodgers
against
Jon Gray
because he has been outstanding even at home this season. I don’t mind using the
Colorado Rockies
against
Brandon McCarthy
.
Nolan Arenado
and
Carlos Gonzalez
are both reasonably priced against a pitcher I’m having a hard time believing is really very good.
St. Louis Cardinals
@
Cincinnati Reds
Straily has been extremely fortunate to have an ERA below four this season. At home against the Cardinals seems like a good time for Straily to pitch more like his 4.80 SIERA and less like his fraudulent ERA.
Matt Adams
and
Stephen Piscotty
are my two favorite plays, but keep an eye on
Jhonny Peralta
and Matt Adams. Both could return from injury on Tuesday and be contrarian plays.
Chicago White Sox
@ Detroit
I’m shocked that
Anibal Sanchez
is a big favorite over
James Shields
in this one. Yes, I know Shields has been very lucky lately. He should get shelled. But it’s Anibal Sanchez!
Jose Abreu
is deservedly down to $2,900 and my favorite play in this lineup other than
Tim Anderson
. I’ll also have a big chunk of
Adam Eaton
and
Melky Cabrera
.
Lineups
I’m going to offer my early take on a cash game lineup, but of course you should always check out our Sportsline projections for lineup changes right up to lock. Also, check out our podcast on iTunes for extended thoughts on each slate from Chris Towers, Mike McClure and myself.
