Despite the record attendance in Louisville, Florida State showed no fear as they defeated the #2 Cardinals in game one of the weekend series by a final score of 13-4.
The Seminoles got on the board early, jumping on one of the best pitchers in the NCAA, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Louisville made things interesting late, however. After a DJ Stewart RBI double made it a 7-2 FSU lead in the sixth, Louisville rallied for two runs in the bottom half, cutting the lead to three. Florida State then sealed the game, scoring in each of the final four innings, a total of seven times against a Louisville bullpen that came into the game a combined 16-0 with a 1.46 ERA.
Boomer Biegalski was on the mound for the Noles, and allowed a total of four runs in his five innings pitched. He gave up a home run in the second, his 11th in 87 total innings pitched this season. The bullpen had another stellar night, and when they are on their game, it is a show to watch. Jim Voyles, Dylan Silva, and Alec Byrd combined for six strikeouts and one walk, while allowing two hits in their four innings of relief.
Offensively, seven of the nine players in the starting lineup recorded a hit. Leadoff hitter Josh Delph went 0-1, but had four of the team’s 11 walks at the plate. DJ Stewart and Ben DeLuzio both recorded two hits and two RBI’s. Stewart also recorded two walks, giving him 59 for the season which is tops in the nation. DeLuzio contributed his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the sixth, in the victory.
The teams will play game two of the series beginning tomorrow at 1 PM.
