We found out Sunday night that the Seminoles were rewarded as a regional host for the 32nd time but were not certain if the committee would over look the five game losing streak at the end of the regular season. It appears it did not and also did not look kindly on an earlier sweep at the hands of Notre Dame. Florida State did finish the season with the most wins against Top 50 RPI teams which included a 6-4 record against 3 national seeds in Louisville, Florida and Miami.
The committee went with Missouri State as a national seed, winners of 16 games in a row, regular season conference title and the MVC Tournament champs. The Bears have had an absolutely fantastic season, losing only one series but their schedule does not even compare to that of the Noles. Florida State led the nation in wins against Top 50 RPI teams with 19, Missouri State had 18 wins against Top 100 schools and only 8 against Top 50. The strength of schedule was also not even close, the Seminoles had the 4th most difficult overall schedule in the country (OCC SOS 16th) while the Bears came in at 97th overall (OCC SOS 117th).
In what was also a shock the committee went with Texas Christian as a national seed, winners of 43 regular season. The Frogs have had an absolutely fantastic season and losing the first two games of the Big 12 Tournament obviously didn’t deter the committee. TCU lost only one series but they played in a terrible conference this season, only two of the teams in the Big 12 have an RPI better than 75. Florida State led the nation in wins against Top 50 RPI teams with 19, Texas Christian had 17 wins against Top 100 schools and only 7 against Top 50. The strength of schedule was also not even close, the Seminoles had the 4th most difficult overall schedule in the country (OCC SOS 16th) while the Horned Frogs came in at 79th overall (OCC SOS 109)
Florida State will host a regional this upcoming weekend and the teams assigned to Tallahassee will be listed shortly.
1. Florida State
2. College of Charleston
3. Auburn
4. Mercer
Because the NCAA is more concerned with saving money than seeding teams where they actually rank Florida State is matched up with the #4 overall seed. Should both teams win their region the Noles will travel to Gainesville for a super regional showdown.
