FSU baseball avenges recent sweep with 3-1 victory over Clemson – Orlando Sentinel
FSU baseball avenged a recent series sweep by defeating Clemson 3-1 to open the ACC Tournament.
The fourth-seeded Seminoles (38-19, 1-0 Pool A) leaned on a strong pitching performance by Boomer Biegalski and a three-run third inning to snap a five-game losing streak, including three straight losses to Clemson to end the regular season, on Wednesday.
Biegalski (6-4) went head-to-head against Clemson ace Matthew Crownover (10-2), who was recently named the ACC’s pitcher of the year. Biegalski, in 6.1 innings, didn’t give up a run, allowed just one hit and walked one batter while striking out seven. Dylan Silva surrendered a run in an inning of relief and allowed the bases to be loaded with one out, but then closer Billy Strode eventually got FSU out of the jam by striking out DH Robert Jolly. Strode finished off the No. 5 Tigers (31-26, 0-1 Pool A) in 1.2 innings to earn his 13th save of the year.
FSU received a key hit from its top slugger, DJ Stewart, in the third inning. A two-out triple netted two runs and then clean-up hitter Quincy Nieporte drove Stewart home with a single to right field to put FSU ahead 3-0.
The Seminoles continue round-robin play 7 p.m. Thursday when they face No.8 North Carolina.
