FSU baseball looks to continue bolstering resume – Tallahassee.com
He’s 46 games into the 2015 season.
His team has won 33 times. And is coming off a weekend in which it took two out of three games at Miami — to go along with a series win over fellow in-state rival Florida earlier in the year.
All in all, Mike Martin seems pleased with how his Florida State Seminoles have played through the first three months of the season. Beating the Hurricanes and the Gators is always a big deal. But that doesn’t mean the veteran head coach is content or satisfied with how much his team, which had plenty of question marks coming into the year, has accomplished already.
“We need to understand there is always room for improvement,” Martin said. “We still have a lot we can do better. We need to understand that. But I can’t say enough about the way we’ve been executing. We’ve executed very well lately.”
After getting swept at Notre Dame earlier this month, Florida State has won seven of its last eight games. The Seminoles are now 33-13 on the season and ranked No. 6 in the latest RPI projections.
It’s the time of year where teams can start making a final push for one of the top eight national seeds. The Seminoles would appear to be in good shape, for now, but also have ACC series left at No. 4 Louisville and at home vs. Clemson.
And this week they host a Coastal Carolina squad that is No. 29 in the country in RPI. And has beaten Clemson, North Carolina, N.C. State and Georgia Tech already this year.
“If I had known they were going to be this good I wouldn’t have scheduled them,” Martin said with a laugh. “And when you see who they’ve beaten from our league you know good they are.”
It will be a non-conference series this weekend at Dick Howser Stadium. But it will be against an ACC-caliber squad. And if the Seminoles were to be successful against the Chanticleers (30-13) this weekend it would be yet another boost to their national-seed resume.
It wouldn’t be wrapped up by any means, but it would put Martin’s team one step closer.
“To say we’re not thinking about it is certainly a lie,” he said. “But I think it would be a little premature in saying anything other than, yes, we have that on our mind. That is our goal every year. And the fact that we’ve been playing good baseball, but we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves.”
