The Florida State baseball team will travel to Key West Wednesday and attend the funeral of 14-year-old Jonathan Wells, the younger brother of FSU freshman outfielder Steven Wells, Jr.

Jonathan Wells, 14, died Thursday, six days after getting shot in the chest with a pellet gun.

Wells, Jr., who has appeared in 18 games this season with two starts in right field, flew to his hometown of Key West following FSU’s series at Notre Dame last weekend.

“The Key West community is devastated as is the Seminole family,” FSU assistant coach Mike Martin Jr. said.

FSU (30-12), coming off a home series ACC sweep of Pittsburgh and winners of four consecutive, is at home Tuesday against Stetson at 6 p.m.

Martin Jr. said the team is scheduled to depart Tallahassee Wednesday morning for Key West.

The funeral for Jonathan Wells, a Horace O’Bryant Middle School eighth-grader who played in the Key West Little Conch Baseball league, is Wednesday afternoon, according to Martin Jr.

It’s still not clear who was holding the pellet gun when it went off in an apartment in Key West April 10. A police investigation is ongoing.

Martin Jr. said Wells, Jr., at his family’s urging, will accompany the team to Miami this weekend for its key three-game ACC series

Wells, Jr. was a two-way player at Key West High, going 7-0 on the mound with a 0.18 ERA and hitting .461.

He is one of two players on FSU’s roster from Key West, joining fellow freshman and high school teammate Darren Miller.

Wells Jr. is batting .188 with 16 plate appearances.

Martin Jr. also said Wells Jr. has returned to the mound and could see time as a pitcher this season.
