Inside Baseball: Mets’ Harvey bought arm insurance; plus more MLB notes – CBSSports.com

NEW YORK — Mets ace Matt Harvey was feeling fine the day after his marvelous 7 2/3-inning outing in Game 1 of the NLCS — a 4-2 Mets victory — and he is said to be a go for Game 5. All looks good in Harvey’s world as he inches past 200 total innings.

But just in case, agent Scott Boras has taken out insurance on Harvey to secure his future.

Boras bought the insurance right at the end of the regular season, when the innings-limit controversy was into its fourth week, at a time it was becoming fairly clear Harvey wasn’t about to put down the ball, probably not even for a moment. The insurance is a two-tiered type, with a certain payout if there’s a loss of earnings based on a slippage of performance, and a different payout if his promising career ends early.

It isn’t known how much Harvey is insured for, though suffice it to say that it couldn’t possibly cover the $200 million expectation on his talented right arm should he still be pitching like this when he makes it to free agency three years from now. The policy surely pays only a fraction of his earning potential.

Even so, it’s a worthwhile idea, if only to provide him peace of mind. The knowledge that he isn’t risking everything might even have given the pitching prodigy a little extra boost psychologically as he heads into uncharted Tommy John territory for a pitcher who never before topped 179 innings.

He is at 202 now, and counting. And the last 7 2/3 were nothing short of brilliant.

Boras says he isn’t shocked that Harvey — who had Tommy John surgery late in the 2013 season — has continued to pitch well. But Boras continues to worry, too.

Boras represented two great young pitchers, Steve Avery and Alex Fernandez, who both got to the World Series by their mid-20s, as Harvey might this year at 27. Both Avery and Fernandez threw a lot of innings, and neither had the career they envisioned early. Fernandez was done at 30. Avery ceased being a star by 24.

At the very least, this story looks like it’s going to have a happy ending in 2015. Fans chanted “Har-vey,” as he pumped pitch after pitch past the Cubs, a formidable lineup filled with talented kids. The Dark Knight rose, and the potential for a trade for one of baseball’s most talented pitchers has been all but obliterated.

Boras isn’t as much concerned about this year as future years, though. He wants to do what he can to ensure that there are plenty of those.

Naturally, Boras has had the future more in mind than the present, but the present is pretty special in the minds of Mets people, who are thrilled to be in the NLCS after posting losing seasons in each of their first six years at Citi Field. And Harvey has been vital to their success, staking them to a one-game NLCS lead Saturday night, when he featured a brilliant changeup and just-as-brilliant breaking stuff to go with the calling card fastball.

Harvey even was hit in the back of his precious right arm by a liner. And, true to his personality, he tried to wave off the team trainer before staying in the game.

Nothing is stopping him now — not that he ever seriously considered missing the playoffs. He really had no choice in that matter.

“Anyone who’s played professional baseball understands that unless your manager or GM or owner says you’re not pitching, you are pitching in the playoffs. That’s a given. All the guys who play pro baseball know that,” Boras said.

There was, of course, the case of Stephen Strasburg, another Boras client who was told in March he would be shut down by his Nationals team. (Strasburg’s arm remains healthy, and from here, the shutdown didn’t cost them that series vs. St. Louis, though others think differently; his replacement Ross Detwiler threw well and won, and the Nats lost the series after the bullpen blew a 6-0 lead in Game 5.) The Mets did the opposite. They said, in fact, from the start that this would be “no Strasburg” situation. And so that was known.

“We were never about him not pitching in the postseason, and we never said Matt Harvey wasn’t going to pitch in the playoffs. Any question revolved around the management of innings,” Boras said. “There’s an obligation — I should say mandate — to pitch. There’s an obligation to the integrity of the game, to his teammates and the fans. At no time did the player or I ever say he wasn’t going to pitch in the postseason.

“I understand Matt Harvey has to pitch,” Boras continued. “The only way not to is to have the team take the ball away from him. And I don’t think they’re doing it anytime soon.”

Harvey’s innings issue became the controversy of the year after Boras and general manager Sandy Alderson squabbled in this space in early September over how many bullets the pitching prodigy had left. But once all the parties, including surgeon James Andrews, hashed things out, tempers cooled and everything improved. The Mets did strike a compromise to shave 20 or so innings off his ledger by sitting Harvey 12 days at a time in September. Today, Boras credits the Mets, especially manager Terry Collins and pitching coach Dan Warthen, for that kind of caution.

Mets co-owner Jeff Wilpon politely declined comment on Harvey, and Alderson also declined to speak on the subject.

Noted Tommy John surgeon Neal ElAttrache, who has been consulted on this case, said that the general guideline is to hold pitchers to previous personal innings marks, though he feels a bit better about Harvey thanks to the lengthy 17-month span between surgery and first pitch. “If it was twelve months, I’d be a little worried at this point,” ElAttrache said. “I think we could make a case either way.”

It’s probably not even debatable that the added September rest was a huge plus for Harvey on Saturday, when he looked unhittable at times. But Boras has a couple more theories for the brilliance the pitcher brought. One is that the cold weather fit the Connecticut kid. “Forget Batman. He’s Mr. Freeze,” the agent said. “He loves it.”

Plus, the adrenaline keeps flowing for a fellow who always loved the big stage.

Still Boras continues to worry.

The best TJ surgeon reminded Boras that Harvey is in Tommy John never never land. The pitchers who have hit these innings numbers in the year following surgery have hit them previously — pitchers like John Lackey, Adam Wainwright, Jake Westbrook, Tommy John. Those pitchers all had all histories of high workloads. Matt’s surgeon has told him we’re in an area where no pitcher has ever been.

Knowing the history and what he has been through before, Boras has dark thoughts every night.

Thus, the agent took a precaution in the way of a policy.

The Diamondbacks are looking for a starting pitcher or two, and there’s some thinking they may take a peek at Mike Leake, a consistent pitcher without a draft pick attached to him by virtue of his deadline trade to the Giants. San Francisco is another of many teams that also like Leake, who is a great athlete (can hit and field) in the mold of Zack Greinke … They may not be too far away as a team after a 15-game improvement. While they need a pitcher or two, “their lineup is one of the best in the league,” one rival exec said.

If the Cubs want to do something very long term with star pitcher Jake Arrieta, and word is they would (no surprise there), Arrieta surely would hope to become the highest paid pitcher in Cubs history. Jon Lester currently holds that distinction, at $155 million over six years. Arrieta is appreciative of all the Cubs have done for him (it was their development staff that helped turn him around; the solution was as simple as telling him to pitch the way he likes and move a few inches over on the rubber). So perhaps he would consider taking a bit of a discount to stay. After all, Arrieta did not have any success in his first big-league stop, in Baltimore … Arrieta didn’t have his best stuff in Game 2, and was sitting at around 93 mph (down a couple mph) with less than usual command. But he’s over 70 innings past his previous high, so he might finally be slowing down. He is two years from free agency, posting a 1.77 ERA with 236 strikeouts in 229 innings over 33 starts this season … One of the best things about the Cubs is not only their youth but the character of their young guys. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Kyle Schwarber is just the sort of nucleus anyone would want to build around … It says something about the state of bunting in the big leagues that hardly anyone’s bunting on Jon Lester, who has trouble throwing to the bases (except underhanded to first, where he’s fine) Teams do take advantage by stealing on him, David Wright did so in Game 1, bad back and all (Wright is smiling through the pain) … Chris Coghlan did a nice job with the Cubs for two years but looks like he might not have a long-term spot on this stacked team. This versatile player could help someone.

While the White Sox will offer Jeff Samardzija the qualifying bid, he has no intention of signing back with the team. No surprise there. For whatever reason, it didn’t work out … Kudos to the scouting guys for tabbing Calros Rodon as the No. 3 pick in the draft a couple years back. He wound up over .500 for a team that didn’t hit (or field very well for that matter) … The White Sox were below average by metrics at every position.

Alex Gordon has a $14 million player option, which everyone expects he’ll turn down, leading to him becoming a free agent. He really has no choice but to turn down the one year; he could easily get five times that (or much more) with free agency possible. He’s known to prefer to stay in KC, though.
	Los Angeles Dodgers News
The Dodgers, whose outfield glut isn’t quite as pronounced as before, could still look to trade Carl Crawford or possibly even Andre Ethier. It’s hard to imagine they wouldwant to sell low on Yasiel Puig, who’s younger and terrifically talented. Crawford might be more productive on turf. Anyway, the Dodgers would have to eat at least half the money to have a chance there … Alex Guerrero wouldn’t mind a trade after the way things ended with the Dodgers. His contract stipulates that he can opt for free agency at the end of the year he’s traded, so that probably prevented teams from dealing for him during the year. But some might be interested this winter since they would have a full season … Chase Utley‘s hearing to appeal his suspension over the now infamous takeout slide in the NLDS against the Mets is scheduled for Monday before MLB’s John McHale.

It was assumed the Mets wouldn’t be giving the $15.8 million qualifying offer to free agent Daniel Murphy. But one GM now says the Mets absolutely have to give it to him, and he should turn it down and hit free agency off his big postseason. He is, after all, the No. 3 hitter on a team two games away from the World Series. It’s a much tougher call, as one Mets person acknowledged … Murphy hit one home run vs. left-handed pitching in the regular season, and has three already in the postseasaon (and not just any left-handers either; two of the home runs came against Clayton Kershaw and one against Jon Lester) … The Mets tried to pry shortstop Addison Russell away from Chicago this winter. Some reports suggested one name discussed in the talks was pitcher Noah Syndergaard. A trade like that might have been pretty fair, but talks never got very far, according to sources … Jeurys Familia just picked up the splitter one day in July, and that was that. Catcher Travis d’Arnaud recalled Familia coming to him one day, and saying, “OK, I throw a splitter now.” d’Arnaud also recalled Familia whiffed two batters with the pitch that day … d’Arnaud says he tries to hit the Big Apple in center field in batting practice and he has yet to do it. But he did it against Lester in Game 1. It was a 430-foot homer that triggered the raising of the Apple … Noah Syndergaard, brilliant in Game 2, with nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings, also is at his innings high of 157 1/3. His previous high was 133 innings for Triple-A Las Vegas in 2014. No sign of a slowdown there, though … Mets co-owner Saul Katz was asked if he had a prediction before Game 1. He raised four fingers, signifying a sweep. Why not? It’s all in fun.
	New York Yankees News
If the Yankees were to sign Jeff Samardzija, he would be reunited with an early pitching coach in Larry Rothschild, plus Yankees executive Jim Hendry, who’s maybe his biggest fan … Hendry hasn’t been called yet by the Phillies. He and Andy MacPhail made a pretty decent team in Chicago. But they seem to looking at mostly younger candidates at the moment.

While it’s known that J.J. Piccolo, Matt Klentak, Matt Slater, Larry Beinfest and Ross Atkins interviewed for the GM job, one source says he believes Kim Ng is somewhere in the mix … They need to trade Ryan Howard to an American League team at this point, because he should be a DH.
	San Diego Padres News
The Padres seem to want to keep Ian Kennedy, who surprisingly had a higher strikeout rate (9.3 per nine) than any free agent except David Price. Kennedy’s velocity was also up, and he’s one of seven pitchers in the majors with at least 180 innings each of the past five years.
	San Francisco Giants News
Tim Lincecum is said to be well ahead of schedule following his hip surgery. His throwing program is expected to begin in four-to-six weeks. While the Giants are looking at it as a possible minor-league deal, if he’s throwing well, he could throw for them.
	Texas Rangers News
Texas could take a look at free-agent catcher Matt Wieters, but only if there’s no draft choice attached. If he gets a qualifying offer, they wouldn’t consider him.
	Toronto Blue Jays News
Mark Buehrle suggested he might listen to offers this winter, but some still believe he is more likely than not to retire. He had a brilliantly consistent career, and a remarkable one considering he was a 38th-round draft choice. If he pitches, the White Sox might have interest at some level. If not, he could do a one-day contract and still retire with Chicago.
