Jameis Winston’s Contract with Buccaneers Will Not Allow QB to Play Baseball – Bleacher Report

Jameis Winston may love playing both football and baseball, but his contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will force the 21-year-old to focus solely on the former.

That makes sense, considering the Buccaneers just used the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft on the quarterback.

Back in February, Winston—who was a closer on the Florida State baseball team—told Peter King of The MMQB that he hadn’t ruled out trying to play both football and baseball professionally. That’s something Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson also wanted to do.

Well, Winston’s dream of being a multisport athlete concerned the Buccaneers, according to King:

That section of the column alarmed [Tampa Bay general manager Jason] Licht, and that Monday he texted Winston and then spoke with him about it. He told Winston that wasn’t something the Bucs would be likely to accept if he was their pick. Winston said he understood but loved baseball so much that he was being honest about it with me.

As a result, the Buccaneers worked a clause into Winston’s rookie deal that prohibits the quarterback from playing professional baseball for the length of his contract, per King. And with that, Winston’s dream of being the next Bo Jackson has been put on hold—if not shattered.
