Shohei Otani is the best baseball player currently working in Japan, a 6-foot-4 slugger who’s just 22 years old and who also happens to be able to throw a baseball 101 mph. He’s Japanese Babe Ruth, and when he finally does come to MLB (could be as early as next season, but probably another year), he is going to make a lot, lot, lot of money.

Also this week, in an exhibition game for Team Japan against Holland in the WBC, he hit a baseball out of stadium through a small hole in the roof, and no one had any idea what to do.

I have now watched this GIF 20 times and I have no plans of stopping.

Look at the reaction of his coach. Look at the reaction of his teammate. Neither of them have ANY idea what just happened. They’re beyond flabbergasted. They can’t even process. They’re not laughing. They’re not celebrating. They’re just sort of confused. The entire arena re-created that scene from Semi Pro where the guy does an alley oop for the first time ever.

Otani was given a ground-rule double for the hit, which seems silly, because the proper call would have been to disband the game and send everyone home.

Look at the pictures from this moment. Team Holland literally got together to try and process it.
