Joey Votto, you’ve come so far.
Last month, Votto lost his cool after a Reds fan got in the way of his attempt at catching a foul ball. He gave the fan a cold staredown then grabbed the Reds logo on his jersey. Between innings, Votto felt bad and returned to give the fan an autographed baseball with an apology note and took a photo with him.
That was nice, and we saw a completely different Votto on Tuesday night.
During the first inning against the Mets, Votto caught an inning-ending foul ball near the same spot of his infamous encounter with the fans. This time, Votto didn’t need to venture into the stands, and no fans made a serious attempt at getting in the way of his catch.
Votto, pleased with the fans’ conduct, gave one fan the baseball and initiated a high five with another fan.
This is a new Joey Votto, people. There’s nothing wrong with progress.
