Jumbo Shrimp host youth baseball clinic – WJXT Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As a kid baseball was one of the first sports I ever tried. I spent a ton of Saturday afternoons trying to become the next Ken Griffey junior or Barry Larkin. For one reason or another there aren’t nearly as many kids playing baseball these days.

The Jumbo Shrimp are trying to change that. This weekend they held a free baseball clinic for over 200 kids from all over the first coast. They got a chance to run the bases and even practice sliding head first.

The camp had boys and girls from as young as six up to age 14. They got a chance to get up close and personal with some of the Jumbo Shrimp players and you could tell the campers were taking notes.

“Everything you do doesn’t just matter about skill,” said camper Shaun Berrios. “It’s about doing things the right way.”

Other campers were just amazed that they got a chance to learn from professional baseball players.

“I started playing and getting better with my coaches helping me,” said Ayden O’Brien. “Then I come to this camp and I’m like woah! I’m getting Jumbo Shrimp players to help me get better and better.”
