7:33 PM, Game 1 recap from Jeff Sentell AL.com: Thompson pounded out 13 hits in a dominating 10-0 run-rule victory against No. 1 Vestavia Hills in a Class 7A quarterfinal. The contest lasted just six innings as the No. 3 Warriors upped the ante on a 5-0 lead by doubling their run production in the final inning.
Starting pitcher Colin Lillie was dominant from the bump and in the box as he recorded three hits and allowed just five hits to the Rebels for the complete game shutout. He struck out six batters and only faced significant danger in the first and fifth innings.
Senior Zach Brammer and junior Heath Haskins also both had three-hit days for the Warriors. Brammer collected three RBIs and senior Stephan Poplin also drove in two runs.
Alabama commitment Sonny Potter is slated to start for Vestavia Hills. Thompson will counter with Northwest Florida signee Poplin with two talented southpaws set to face off.
7:25 PM, Game 1 recap from Daniel Boyette, AL.com: Sparkman leadoff hitter Brock Anderson hit two homers and drove in three runs as the visiting Senators beat Huntsville 7-4 in the opening game of a Class 7A quarterfinal doubleheader. Anderson hit a solo shot in the third, and a two-run dinger in the fourth as Sparkman (22-18) jumped to a 6-0 lead. Drake Sanchez added a two-run single, and Will Sipes went 3-for-4.
Carter Vickers got the win, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3-innings. He struck out three and walked two. Jared Howell, who had a sac fly at the plate, threw the final 1 1/3-innings, allowing a run.
Huntsville’s Whitt Davis homered to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Panthers (24-13) loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. But Howell got Chase Lovell fly out a step in front of the center-field wall to end the inning. Graham Ashcraft hit a solo homer, but also took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits over five innings. He fanned seven and walked two.
7:18 PM, Game 1 recap from Ben Thomas, AL.com: Kyle Bayley pitched seven strong innings as Fairhope upset No. 7 Theodore 12-4 in the first game of their Class 7A doubleheader at Theodore. The Pirates scored five runs in the second and seven in the fifth to snap the Bobcats’ 17-0 streak at home.
Andrew Miller, Bailey Daniels, Bayley and Ryan Merritt each had two hits for Fairhope. The Pirates chased Theodore ace Jordan Taylor after 4.1 innings. He allowed 10 runs on 10 hits.
