3:18 p.m.: It’s official. The Tigers have announced the signing of right-handed setup man Mark Lowe to a two-year deal. Terms of the deal have not been made official, but he will earn $11 million over the two-year pact, MLive.com has learned. Detroit’s 40-man roster is now at full capacity, so that means any new signings will need a corresponding move.
1:42 p.m.: Here’s an interesting tidbit from the Dallas Morning News: Texas is reportedly “surveying” rival teams to gauge the market’s interest in “picking up (the) bulk” of Prince Fielder’s contract. The Tigers, as your probably aware, remain on the hook for $30 million of the 30-year-old’s nine-year, $214 million deal he signed in 2012, but the Rangers are still responsible for $90 million through 2020.
12:21 p.m.: If you think the Tigers overpaid for Lowe, take into consideration the reported two-year deals relievers Chad Qualls and Jason Motte have signed with the Rockies. Motte will receive $10 million over his two years, and Qualls will earn $6 million from Colorado, Rosenthal reported Tuesday afternoon. In other words, the market for relievers is thin, and expensive.
11:44 a.m.: FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal initially reported Mark Lowe signed a two-year deal with the Tigers for $6.5 million. He later reported the Tigers inked Lowe to a two-year deal for $13 million. This morning, he reported Lowe’s total guarantee is $11 million. That figure isn’t expected to contain bonus incentives.
11:13 a.m.: I ran into former Tigers closer Joe Nathan in the lobby of the Gaylord Opryland hotel Monday night. Nathan confirmed he’s had conversations with clubs this winter and there’s a belief he could be ready to pitch for a team by mid-season. Truth be told, he could be a low-risk, high-reward-type signing.
