Quinn Brodey singled to center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to drive home Matt Winaker and lift Stanford to a 3-2 win over the No. 21 Longhorns baseball team in Stanford, Calif. on Friday night.
The Longhorns (7-4) scored twice in the first inning but failed to add any more runs as the No. 19 Cardinal (7-3) chipped away at the lead.
Colton Hock (2-0) earned the win, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one batter in two innings. Andrew Summerville started the game and allowed two runs on four hits through seven innings. He settled down after giving up two runs in the first inning, not allowing another run through the next five innings.
Jake McKenzie (1-1) was hit with the loss. Morgan Cooper recorded no decision after having a strong start, allowing one run on five hits through six innings. He struck out five batters in his third quality start in a row.
Kacy Clemens and Travis Jones each had a run batted in for Texas. Clemens grounded out in the first, allowing Zane Gurwitz to score from third. Gurwitz singled to get on base. Jones drove home Tyler Rand with a single to center one batter later.
Stanford cut the lead in half in the sixth inning when Mikey Diekroeger hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Duke Kinamon to tag up and score from third.
With the bases loaded in the seventh, Nico Hoerner hit into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but Kacy Clemens opted not throw to second and got the sure out at first. The play allowed Alec Wilson to score from third and tie the game.
The third game of the series starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday with Kyle Johnston slated to start for Texas.
