LSU baseball drops 3, 5, 6 places in national rankings after Alabama series – NOLA.com

LSU dropped three, five and six places, respectively, in the D1Baseball.com, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America national rankings this week.

The Tigers’ slide follows a 1-2 start to SEC play this weekend against unranked Alabama (13-6, 2-1) after dropping both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to the Crimson Tide, 6-0 and 4-3.

LSU (14-5, 1-2) rebounded with a 7-5 victory Sunday behind the strength of a six-run eighth inning.

But its standing in each of the three polls still took a slight hit entering a Tuesday matchup with Louisiana-Lafayette and then a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series against Texas A&M.

The Tigers fell from No. 7 in the D1Baseball.com and Baseball America rankings to Nos. 10 and 13, respectively.

LSU is now No. 15 in the Collegiate Baseball poll after being No. 10 in recent weeks.

The Tigers hadn’t lost a series to the Crimson Tide at home since 1996 prior to the weekend, or been swept in a home doubleheader since 1989.

Consecutive losses to Arkansas-Little Rock this weekend dropped Louisiana-Lafayette (12-8) out of the Baseball America poll from No. 16 last week.

Texas A&M (18-2, 2-1) remains No. 2 on the D1Baseball.com and Baseball America lists, behind top-ranked Florida (21-1, 3-0), but took one step back from No. 3 to No. 4 in the Collegiate Baseball rankings after a 3-1 week that included a 9-7 loss to Auburn on Saturday.

The weekend wasn’t particularly kind to the top of the SEC — outside of the Gators.

Vanderbilt (17-3, 1-2) also fell six spots in the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America polls to Nos. 8 and 11, respectively, after dropping its weekend series to Mississippi State.

But the Commodores climbed from No. 8 to No. 5 in the D1Baseball.com rankings.
