LSU baseball: Slugger Greg Deichmann is ‘day-to-day’ after facial surgery – SECcountry.com

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU baseball’s most powerful hitter might be back for Friday’s season opener after all.

Two days after taking a pitch to the face in a practice, junior outfielder Greg Deichmann underwent surgery to mend his fractured right cheekbone Sunday. According to a release issued by an LSU spokesperson, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri lists Deichmann as “day-to-day” and didn’t rule out the possibility of the outfielder returning to the field by the time LSU opens its season against Air Force this weekend.

In the release, Mainieri said a decision will not be made about Deichmann’s availability until Thursday afternoon.

A speedy recovery for Deichmann would be massive for LSU baseball, especially after losing All-SEC designated hitter Bryce Jordan for the season to a knee injury last week. Deichmann led the Tigers with 11 home runs in 2016, adding 57 RBI and a .513 slugging percentage.
