MEBANE, N.C. — A 35-year-old Mebane man is charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing a woman by hitting her with a baseball bat.
At 5:43 p.m. Thursday, Alamance Central Communications received a 911 call indicating a fight was in progress, with one person being armed with a knife, the other with a baseball bat. Officers responded to Rice Mobile Home Park at 333 Edgewood Church Road in Mebane.
According to a press release, two men were involved in an altercation when officers arrived.
They also found 21-year-old Sara Marie Huber lying on the home’s porch. She was breathing, but unconscious and bleeding from a head injury, according to the press release from Kirk Puckett with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.
Huber died on the way to the hospital. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
Marshall Randolph Paschal
Puckett said officers believe Marshall Randolph Paschal hit Huber in the head with the baseball bat when she tried to intervene in the fight. It’s unclear what that original fight was about.
Investigators say the victim (Huber) lived in the home with her boyfriend, his younger sibling, Huber’s infant child, her boyfriend’s mother and the mother’s boyfriend (Paschal).
Paschal was charged with first-degree murder, assault on a female and assault on a law enforcement officer. He is being held without bond in the Alamance County Detention Center.
Huber’s boyfriend is physically OK, his father Jake Tillotson told FOX8. But their family is devastated.
“My son’s girlfriend is who it happened to and I’m still in shock over it all. She was the sweetest, kindest person you’d ever meet. No mean intentions in her at all. So for this to happen to her just really hit home to me.”
Paschal has a criminal history dating back to 1996.
He is listed as a habitual felony offender.
Tillotson added, “I would say for people to be cautious who you trust and who you bring in your home because you never know what can happen.”
Paschal’s court date is set for Jan. 4 at 9 am.
