MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (August 12, 2015) – Drew Bowlin, a former minor league pitcher in the San Francisco Giants organization, has been named the newest assistant coach for the Milligan College baseball team. The addition was announced by Head Baseball Coach Nathan Meade.
“I am excited about what Drew will bring to our program,” said Coach Meade. “He’s very knowledgeable and obviously has a background that has provided him with a lot of resources and experience that I feel our players will benefit from.”
In his role with Buffaloes baseball, Bowlin will work as the team’s pitching coach, as well as assist with recruiting and other day-to-day operations.
Bowlin was drafted by the San Francisco Giants organization in the 23rd round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. He pitched for eight years in the Giants minor league system, including one season at the Triple-A level and two in Double-A. Additionally, he appeared in spring training with the Giants twice.
During his time in the Giants organization, Bowlin played with current major leaguers such as Madison Bumgarner, Hunter Strickland, Joe Panik, Andrew Susac and Adam Duvall. Additionally, the Giants won three World Series titles (2010, 2012, 2014) during his tenure in the organization.
Coach Bowlin said, “After eight years of playing baseball for the San Francisco Giants and a second elbow injury following an earlier surgery in my career, I retired from the game of baseball. However, Milligan College has offered me a great opportunity to continue in the game I have loved since I was four years old. Coaching baseball will allow me to pass on all things I learned during those eight years of pro ball, and two years of college baseball.”
Overall in the minors, Bowlin was 13-12 with 13 starts in 250.1 innings pitched (171 total games), and struck out 215 total batters.
Bowlin played baseball collegiately for one year at Chattanooga State Technical Community College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During his time at Chattanooga State, Bowlin was both an all-conference and all-tournament player. Before Chattanooga State, Bowling redshirted as a catcher at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Bowlin is from Dandridge, Tennessee, where he attended Jefferson County High School (JCHS) and played baseball, football and basketball. As a senior in baseball, he was named to the 2005 TSWA Class AAA All-State team while hitting .410 with 12 home runs for JCHS, and led the Inter-Mountain Athletic Conference with 58 RBIs. Also during his senior season, he posted a 4-2 record on the mound and recorded 37 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. As a junior in 2004, Bowlin led his team to district and regional titles while leading the Patriots in home runs.
Coach Bowlin added, “More than the baseball, I am a Christian first and foremost, and I plan to try my best to work with these young men to instill the qualities and characteristics that any young man should have.
