Missing 19-Year-Old College Baseball Player Found Dead in Freezing Temperatures – People Magazine

A college baseball player in Syracuse, New York, who was last seen leaving a party late Saturday night, was found dead early Monday near the school’s baseball fields in temperatures that were well below zero, authorities said.

Alex Hendry, a 19-year-old freshman at Onondaga Community College, was reported missing Sunday by his roommate after he failed to return home the previous night, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. His body was found around 1 a.m. Monday morning.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the cause of death, but foul play is not suspected, WROC-TV reports.

Temperatures in the Syracuse area dipped below -20 degrees Fahrenheit overnight Saturday into Sunday. They were still below zero overnight Sunday into Monday.

“Onondaga Community College is saddened to announce the death of student Alex Hendry,” the school said in a statement. “Hendry was a freshman from Hilton High School in Rochester. He was a general studies major and a member of the college’s baseball team … The thoughts and prayers of our entire campus community are with Hendry’s family and friends.”

Hendry was described as a well-liked young man with a playful grin and an infectious spirit.

“He was just a competitor. He always had a huge smile on his face and always brought a lot of positive energy,” Jeff Murphy, his former baseball coach at Hilton High School, told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. “He was a leader for us. He loved the game and played it the right way. He played every game like it was his last, and he made that contagious for everyone else.”
