When the Yankees postseason run comes to an end, big decisions must be made on key pieces to the franchise’s puzzle.
From a potential opt-out with righty Masahiro Tanaka to Joe Girardi’s managerial future, there’s no shortage of decisions for the front office and ownership to make in the next few months.
Of course, that’s assuming the general manager of the team will be the one to make those decisions.
Brian Cashman, the architect of a team that looks to be on the verge of a long run of contention, has an expiring contract that has to be addressed. If the Yankees want the tenured GM back, it’s going to cost big money.
How much? According to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe, we may be looking a record deal for an executive in order to keep rebuilding teams from poaching Cashman away.
Great time to grab one the of best GMs in baseball? Cashman’s contract is expiring. While we believe Randy Levine and Hal Steinbrenner will re-up Cashman and make him the highest-paid GM in the game (yes, even more than Epstein’s $10 million per year), there’s an opportunity for a team (hello, Marlins and Braves) to step in and create a little competition.
While more than $10M per year may seem like a big price, it’s one the Yankees are likely going to have to pay. If Cashman were to hit the open market, Miami and Atlanta would probably be just two of more than a handful of teams willing to pay big money for the Yankees exec.
Since taking over the general manager role in 1998, Cashman’s teams have won four World Series (1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) and never finished with a losing record.
